2009 (working title)

Ásrún Magnúsdóttir, Alexander Graham Roberts

On 1 January 2026, Germany’s Military Service Modernization Act came into force. Since then, upon turning 18, every individual receives a questionnaire for his or her birthday, designed to assess their willingness, skills, and suitability for military service. As many other countries, Germany is rearming in response to what appears to be an increasingly unstable global security situation. Young people today are directly confronted with the question: What would it mean to go to war? And what would it mean to go to war for Germany? Ásrún Magnúsdóttir and Alexander Roberts, the creators of Teenage Songbook of Love and Sex, in which a group of young people sang songs of love, longing and loneliness, curiosity and self-doubt, focus on today’s 18-year-olds in their new production, exploring contradictions and the political dimensions of personal experiences. 2009 is part DJ set, part live concert, and part dance party, hosted by Berliners born in 2009 – a new army, potentially.
