On Thursday evening, we’re breaking through the waves of the past few weeks at VOLKSBAD. This time with BLACK Communion, a platform curated by Eiliyas for explorative and experimental music and sound art from across the African diaspora.

Eiliyas is a Berlin-based artist working across music, sound design, creative writing, and conceptual art. BLACK Communion brings together artists from different contexts, creating space for exchange, collaboration, and musical practice beyond genre boundaries.

Wishing Wells is a sound installation initiated by Eiliyas at VOLKSBAD – a collective sonic gesture towards Black communities in Berlin. Drawing on submitted voice notes, Eiliyas creates a sound collage that makes support, connection, and care audible.

On 17 September, Sera Kalo, Robert “Chi” Machiri, and Khadim Ndobe will perform together as a trio, accompanied by a Hosting Ceremony with Eiliyas and a DJ set by Amuleto Manuela.

Sera Kalo is a vocalist, composer and bandleader working across experimental jazz, free improvisation and contemporary sound. Her practice understands jazz as a living form of resistance and performance as a shared ritual.

Robert “Chi” Machiri works across sound, image, free improvisation and new media. His practice engages with history, memory and the archive, using sound to create connections between these different spaces.

Khadim Ndobe is a vibraphonist and percussionist. Rooted in West African percussion traditions, he brings together jazz, classical music and improvisation in a musical language that moves between tradition and the future.

Amuleto Manuela works across dance floors, art institutions and listening spaces. Her practice brings together immersive soundscapes, collective listening and genre-defying DJ sets.
